Barn Quilt Painting
Tuition: $210 | Materials: $60
If you've ever driven through the coastal community of Tillamook, OR, you might've seen a painted, geometric quilt block affixed to the outside of a barn or building, part of a self-guided trail celebrating the region's dairy farms and rural heritage. More info...
More than 100 hand-painted blocks now dot the county between Manzanita and Neskowin, each one translating the intimacy of pieced fabric into something bold enough to read from a moving car, a nod to the generations of quilters whose patterns they borrow.
In this workshop, you'll create your own large-scale, folk-art-inspired quilt square using exterior latex paint on a 3-foot by 3-foot plywood panel. Barn quilts read beautifully outdoors, but hold their own inside the home or garden too.
Students can choose from a selection of traditional quilt-block patterns or bring their own design. Instructors Betsy Walton and Carson Ellis demonstrate how to scale a design up and transfer it to the panel, then guide students through color mixing and painting technique, staying on hand for questions and support throughout the day.
Everyone leaves with a finished barn quilt panel.
