Oil Painting: A First Look

In three hours, students will learn the fundamentals of working with oils in a solvent-free environment — covering materials, color mixing, blending, and layering — and leave with a first finished oil painting on high-quality gessoed cotton rag paper. Rachel will bring greenery and fruit to paint from life, and students are also welcome to bring a printed photo reference if they prefer.
Whether a complete beginner or simply curious about the medium, students will find that oils have a lower barrier to entry than most people expect. This class will give them the skills and confidence to set up a healthy, joyful painting practice at home.
All materials provided — paints, palettes, brushes, cleaning supplies, and aprons.
This workshop is held at Rachel's NE Portland studio. The studio is located on the 2nd floor and is, unfortunately, not ADA accessible.
No previous experience necessary. This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over who meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria for Studio Workshops. All participants must accept the inherent risks of participating in a Studio Workshop and agree to sign a liability waiver.
