Tile as Canvas: Painting on Ceramics
Tuition: $125 | Materials: $15
In this 3-hour workshop, you'll learn the fundamentals of painting with underglaze. More info...
Painting isn't just for canvas or paper. In this 3-hour workshop, you'll learn the fundamentals of painting with underglaze — a versatile ceramic medium that can be applied transparently like watercolor or built up opaquely like gouache or acrylic.
Whether you're new to painting or an experienced maker curious about a new medium, underglaze is approachable and expressive. You'll explore color mixing, layering, and techniques for scraping and wiping away color to create depth and texture — all on a 6"x6" bisque-fired ceramic tile provided by your instructor. Each student will leave with at least one finished tile painting, ready to be fired.
All tiles will be kiln-fired in Rachel's studio and available for pickup approximately 1–2 weeks after the workshop — she will email to coordinate pickups when the pieces are finished.
This workshop is held at Rachel's NE Portland studio. The studio is located on the 2nd floor and is, unfortunately, not ADA accessible.
This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over, who is prepared to hike all day (rain or shine) on uneven terrain, off-trail. This is not a suitable workshop for those with health conditions that may be triggered or exacerbated by hiking, carrying a backpack, or being outside for 5+ hours in variable weather conditions.
