Learn how to use rattan reed in a variety of sizes, and twisted seagrass to create a traditional market basket with a handle. More info...

Artist and educator Brittany Stanton will show students how to weave an open base with a twined perimeter, building a plain weave with start and stop rows with seagrass incorporated into the walls of the basket. Students will use flat-oval reed to assemble a rim with a seagrass insert, learning how to use a whip stitch lashing technique to finish off the upper edge of the basket. Brittany has designed this class with the beginner basket weaver in mind, including discussions of weaving terminology, basketry materials, and tools, their uses, and how students can translate these techniques into other basket forms.

Each student will leave the class with a handwoven market basket that has a wooden handle. Approximate dimensions of the basket will be 16-in long, by 8.5-inches wide with 7-inch tall walls and a 10-inch tall handle.
