Teacher: Brittany Knotek | Dates: Friday, 04.23, 10am-4pm & Sunday, 04.25, 2-4:30pm , | Location: Pearl District Studio
Tuition: $220 | Materials: $65

This two-session workshop, led by instructor Brittany Knotek, introduces students to the process of building durable outdoor mosaics using handmade stained ceramic tile. More info...

Students design and construct their own garden stepping stone using concrete pavers, handmade ceramic pieces, thinset mortar, and outdoor grout, and along the way, learn what sets outdoor mosaic work apart from indoor mosaics, from material choices to weather-resistant technique.

On Friday, students learn outdoor mosaic fundamentals and design considerations, then compose their mosaic using a curated palette of handmade stained tile before learning to mix and apply thinset mortar. Pieces stay at WildCraft over the weekend so the mortar can fully cure. On Sunday, students return to learn grouting technique, finish and clean their piece, and take home a completed stepping stone ready for the garden.

By the end of the workshop, students understand the differences between indoor and outdoor mosaic techniques, how to design for outdoor use, how to work with handmade ceramic tile, and how to safely mix, apply, and finish thinset mortar and grout, plus how to care for and install their finished piece at home.
