Beginning Figure Carving: Wooden Animals

Teacher: Rose Holdorf | Date: Sat, 03.07 , 10am-4pm | Location: SE Division Studio
Tuition: $175 | Materials: $20

Dive into woodcarving and knife skills in this one-day workshop with woodworker and educator Rose Holdorf. More info...

Students will start by practicing a foundation of carving grips—distinct ways of holding a knife—while shaping simple basswood forms. Building on these techniques, you’ll move on to more complex figures, choosing from a variety of animal blanks prepared by the instructor. By the end of class, you can expect to complete a practice carving as well as a finished animal figure, and you’ll leave with the skills and confidence to continue carving your own menagerie at home!

Rose will share traditions of animal carving from around the world, and take time to educate students on how to maintain and sharpen their tools. This class is open to beginning and experienced woodworkers alike but does require the ability to withstand strenuous hand work. Rose will offer breaks and share her favorite hand stretches.
