Multi-Block Linocut Printmaking

Teacher: Rhiannon Alpers | Dates: Thursday Evenings 02.25-03.18 , 5:30-8:30pm | Location: Pearl District Studio
Tuition: $400 | Materials: $45

Multiple linocut block printing creates possibilities for variation, combination, registration, and reuse. More info...

Unlike reduction linocut, where a single block is progressively carved away, multi-block printing allows each block to remain an active part of the process, opening up possibilities for experimentation and change.

Over four, 3-hour sessions, students will explore how separate blocks can be carved, combined, rearranged, and printed in layers to build a multi-color image. Along the way, we’ll look at how registration can hold an image together or introduce variation, how colors interact as they are layered, and how individual blocks can be reused to create new combinations and results.

Printmaker Rhiannon Alpers will lead the group through designing, carving, and printing, demonstrating ways to develop multiple blocks as individual elements of a larger image. Students will have opportunities to experiment throughout the process, discovering how changes in color, registration, layering, and block combinations can transform a print.

By the end of the 4-week course, students will leave with a small edition of multi-color linocut prints (approximately 6 x 8") and a working understanding of relief carving, color layering, registration, and the possibilities of variation through multi-block printing.
