"You are the conductor, so to speak, of your orchestra of color and water. The music you make will be your own." - Bonnie Paisley More info...

Watercolor is a medium that has been used by artists for many thousands of years and spans many cultures. In Western European Art, it was often used for studies and sketches in preparation for more process-heavy practices of etching, oil paint, and fresco. Chinese painters used it to evoke ephemeral and sublime landscapes. Middle-Eastern and Indian artists used watercolor to produce jewel-like miniatures. Presently, contemporary artists of all kinds are attracted to its vibrant color, active flow, and subtle transparency.
Over the course of four Monday evenings, artist and educator Bonnie Paisley will introduce students to watercolor paint and a variety of traditional techniques including gradient washes, edge blending, masking and transparent layering. Lessons on non-traditional techniques such as pouring, salting, resist techniques, and using layering mediums will also be provided. Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, students will begin to learn how the relationship between the quantity of water, the type of paper, and the pigments used will inform the painted surface. Students will be encouraged to experiment and practice with the option to paint from life or to paint from imagination. Throughout the course, Bonnie will show examples of the wide variety of ways in which watercolor has been used historically and in the contemporary context.
Bonnie is a very experienced and intuitive instructor who can help students explore how this painting medium will support each person's individual goals. No prior experience with paint, color, or drawing necessary. Faith in one’s ability to learn is required as well as understanding that one’s vision is always ahead of one’s execution.
Students will be sent a materials list for paints and paint brushes upon registering. All other materials will be supplied.
