Learn the traditional European technique of stake and strand basketry using locally grown and harvested willow. This classic method—developed in rural workshops across Europe—creates sturdy, functional baskets through an efficient building process that starts from the base up.
Students will begin by learning how willow is prepared for weaving: how rods are sorted by size, soaked to restore pliability, and mellowed to the perfect working condition. Then students will twine a round base and progress to randing the basket walls with decorative weaves. Working with the natural color variations in willow, students will discover how to create subtle patterns while learning to manipulate and shape the flexible rods. The workshop concludes with finishing techniques: creating a secure border and adding small handles for a polished, professional result.
Students will leave with a completed 10”x10” basket and the foundational skills to continue exploring this ancient craft.
No previous experience necessary. This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over who meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria for Studio Workshops.
