Weaving with Willow: Gathering Baskets
Tuition: $180 | Materials: $40
In this one-day workshop, students learn to weave a small (12”x12”x 5”) ribbed basket in the Appalachian tradition under the guidance of instructor Molly Steadman. More info...
Working with locally harvested willow, Molly will demonstrate how to build a basket using ribbed construction, encouraging students to adjust the shape and dimensions of each basket to create something suited to their own tastes. This weaving technique is distinct from the stake-and-strand method used in most basketry classes, and ideal for creating a rounded shape and sturdy basket.
Throughout the day, students will explore color, texture, and form across a variety of willow species and weaving techniques, while Molly discusses harvesting ethics and how to identify and gather willow material. Students will leave with a finished gathering basket and the foundation to keep exploring ribbed basketry at home. No experience necessary.
