Weaving a Catshead Basket with Chevrons

In this rattan reed basketry class, students will learn to weave an open catshead base and shape it into a graceful bowl form. The basket is finished with a neat lashed rim, then enhanced with decorative chevrons that bring movement and texture to the design. Each step will be demonstrated with ample time to weave, ask questions, and receive feedback. The basket itself will be completed in class, while the decorative chevron element—a simple, repetitive weave applied to the external surface—will be started but not finished. Brittany will ensure students fully understand this process before they leave, equipping them with the confidence to complete the chevron work at home. The finished piece measures approximately nine inches in diameter and nine inches tall.
