Translating to “floating ink”, Suminagashi differs from Ebru, or Western marbling, in that the carbon-rich sumi inks float upon plain, un-sized water. This allows for a very fluid expression of the inks, in which the artist determines brush placement and little else. The interaction of wind, water and inks will delight and surprise, as students collaborate with the elements and learn a variety of techniques to achieve stunning designs.
Artist and educator Kate Heywood, will guide students through this meditative practice, allowing time to experiment and capture designs on a variety of paper types and alternative materials, including a silk scarf. Students will leave class with a collection of unique prints perfect for framing or incorporating into future art projects.
No previous experience necessary. This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over who meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria for Studio Workshops.
