Hannah Watson

Originally from South Carolina, Hannah grew up spending weekends in the woods of the upstate where her grandparents lived on a farm, her grandmother ran a sewing and quilting business, and her ancestors tended to sheep and processed wool. Her other grandmother in the lowcountry cross stitched and wove, while her great grandfather worked as a mechanical engineer and inventor of small machines. Her childhood was also influenced by architecture and drawing, as her mother and father jointly ran an architectural firm from the time she was born until 2022. After studying anthropology and costume design at the College of Charleston, she interned with a women’s weaving cooperative in the Sacred Valley, Peru and returned to South Carolina to work with an indigo grower and dyer’s small business for several years. Hannah then moved to North Carolina to pursue natural dyeing, weaving, and collage workshops at Penland School of Craft and John C. Campbell Folk School. Answering the call to go deeper with weaving and artistic exploration, she completed a Professional Craft degree in Fiber at Haywood Community College in 2017. Hannah continues to study creative processes that inform her relationship to the natural world and to long-held cultural traditions she hopes to pass down. She currently resides in Portland.
