Learn to crab along the picturesque Tillamook Bay with marine biologist and educator Alanna Kieffer! More info...

Class will take place at the Historic US Coast Guard Boathouse in Garibaldi, OR. Built in 1936, the 760 ft-long pier has served this rural community in many ways over the years, and now thanks to the Garibaldi Cultural Heritage Initiative, Alanna will use this unique structure as a classroom to introduce students to Oregon’s iconic Dungeness Crab! Students will learn about crab biology, including how to differentiate sexes and how to identify different crab species within the bay. Alanna will also cover sustainable and legal harvest of crabs, reviewing state rules on minimum size, quantity of harvest and season.

Crabbing is not a spectator sport, so be prepared to roll up your sleeves! Alanna will use crabs caught during class for a cooking and cleaning demonstration at the boathouse, and folks will be invited to dive in and eat their crabs on-site! If the group gets lucky, students may be able to take home live crabs.

This workshop will require all students to purchase an ODFW shellfish permit in advance of class. Details on weather and activity-appropriate clothing, as well as a small list of basic gear (gloves, 5-gallon bucket, etc) will be provided upon registration. While we can guarantee an exciting and educational experience, we can never guarantee a full pot of crabs.

This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over, who is prepared to hike all day (rain or shine) on uneven terrain, off-trail. This is not a suitable workshop for those with health conditions that may be triggered or exacerbated by hiking, carrying a backpack, or being outside for 5+ hours in variable weather conditions.
