Applique & Embroidery in the Round
Tuition: $165 | Materials: $35
Join artist and educator Carolyn Hazel Drake for this robust one-day workshop covering not just one, but TWO essential handwork skills - applique AND embroidery! More info...
Applique and embroidery are foundational surface design techniques used to decorate and embellish textiles in many cultural traditions. This workshop will focus on the best practices for combining these skills to make representational or symbolic works of fiber art. Carolyn will guide students through creating radial compositions, designed to be finished in an embroidery hoop. With an emphasis on symmetry, balance and the elements of design, students will draw references from their own sketches or follow one of Carolyn’s templates. Fastidious about using quality materials, Carolyn will provide an array of naturally dyed cottons, linen, and wool for students to work with, leading to polished, professional results.
Students will learn foundational embroidery techniques including running stitch, whipstitch, back stitch and couching, and be instructed in Carolyn’s process for raw edge applique, which allows stitchers to achieve very sharp, precise shapes. Everyone will leave class with a unique and beautiful textile composition, and the confidence to continue practicing both applique and embroidery beyond class.
This course is suitable for beginners but requires good fine motor skills for success.
