In this one-day workshop, botanist and fiber artist Shelby Lynn guides students through the ancient tradition of lichen dyeing, exploring the history, lore, and techniques that coax color from these incredible organisms.
Students will learn basic lichenology, ethical harvesting practices, and how to identify common local lichens suitable for dyeing. The class covers the complete dyeing process: preparing dye baths, mordanting fabric, and exploring lichen-specific techniques including the bwm method, ammonia extraction, and photo-oxidative dyes. Students will also learn how to alter dye colors by shifting pH, unlocking even more possibilities from a single lichen species.
Perfect for beginners and experienced dyers alike—anyone curious about the weird and wonderful world of lichens. Students leave with a beautifully dyed and patterned silk scarf, woolen dye samples, dye cards, printed instructions, and a deeper appreciation for these remarkable organisms.
No previous experience necessary. This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over who meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria for Studio Workshops.
