Lichen Dyes
Tuition: $160 | Materials: $30
Lichens are mysterious organisms dotting the urban and natural landscapes all around us! Join botanist and fiber artist Cheshire Mayrsohn for a day in the studio and learn how to find, identify and ethically harvest lichens for natural dyeing. More info...
Students will explore processing a variety of common local lichens to yield a rainbow of colors - pink, orange, yellow, blue and lilac - for dyeing wool and protein fibers. Cheshire will guide students in preparing dye baths, mordanting fabric, and altering dye colors by shifting pH. Students will leave class with a set of wool samples, dye cards, a comprehensive booklet covering the process of lichen dyes, and a better understanding of and appreciation for lichens!
