Contemporary Kintsugi: Intricate Repairs

Teacher: Emi Joyce | Date: Fri, 03.20 , 10am-4pm | Location: North Mississippi ANNEX
Tuition: $180 | Materials: $20

Going beyond the foundational skills covered in our Introduction to Kintsugi workshop, this full-day course invites students deeper into the meditative and technically demanding practice of ceramic repair. More info...

The focus of this workshop is on intricate reconstructions—working with vessels that have shattered into multiple fragments, addressing missing pieces, and learning advanced techniques for creating seamless transitions. The intermediate approach allows time to work thoughtfully with personally meaningful objects, applying both technical skill and emotional care to the restoration process.

A broken ceramic vessel is provided for practice, but students are strongly encouraged to bring their own pieces for repair. Items should be glazed ceramics smaller than 12 inches—they can be heavily shattered or even missing significant pieces. Depending on the complexity of your chosen pieces and your individual working pace, one to three items can be completed during the workshop.

As with the 3-hour introductory course, modern materials (not traditional urushi) are used, making repaired pieces suitable for display only. Students seeking food-safe repairs should consider Emi's 4-week Traditional Kintsugi intensive.

Having taken Intro to Kintsugi is encouraged but not required - beginners welcome!
