Coiled Basketry

In this three-hour workshop, instructor Shannon Squire guides students through the meditative process of wrapping rope with colorful fabric strips and stitching coils together to create sculptural vessels.

This accessible form of coiled basketry requires no special equipment—just fabric, rope, needle, and thread. Students will learn to prepare fabric strips for wrapping, establish a coiled base, build up the basket walls, and use decorative stitching to secure each coil while adding visual interest. The technique allows for endless creative possibilities: mix prints and solids, play with color gradients, or create bold geometric patterns as you coil.

By the end of class, students will have started their first basket and prepared enough materials to complete at least one full basket at home. These finished pieces work beautifully as catch-alls, bread baskets, or sculptural home decor—and they're an excellent way to give new life to fabric scraps and textile remnants.
