Bookmaking, Expanded
Tuition: $400 | Materials: $65
Over four weeks, book artist Camilla Watson will guide students through an intensive introduction into bookbinding, using a new book form each week (pamphlets, accordion books, case-bound and coptic books) to teach the fundamentals of technique, materials, embellishments and even restoration. Students practice multiple sewing and folding techniques and their applications, along with different approaches to building a book cover. Camilla will also demonstrate how to select paper and book cloth, how to measure and cut bookboard, and why grain direction matters.
Class begins with an overview of materials and basic book structures, including the pamphlet stitch, along with folding techniques such as accordion books, flag books, and lotus fold books. In week two, students build a casebound book start to finish, folding signatures, sewing them together, lining the spine, prepping the cover, and casing the textblock in. The following week introduces the coptic stitch, along with decorative additions like stitching, panels, and inlays. For the final session, students choose their own path: build a slipcase and a wrap-around trinket box, or bring a book from home to rebind with a new cover and decorative elements, along with an introduction to book restoration.
Students leave the course with four to six completed bookbinding projects and a solid foundation to keep building on through self-guided practice.
