This accessible two-day workshop invites weavers of all experience levels to engage with the ancient craft of basketry through a thoroughly practical project. First-time basket makers will discover that this traditional skill is well within reach, while experienced crafters can explore new techniques and color patterns.
On Saturday, students will begin by forming the foundational shape of their pack, learning the fundamental over-under weaving pattern that has been used across cultures for millennia. Working with high-quality rattan in a variety of natural and dyed colors, students will have the opportunity to create simple geometric patterns or work in solid tones as their basket takes shape beneath their hands.
Sunday focuses on the finishing techniques that transform weaving into a functional piece: creating a sturdy rim and attaching comfortable carrying straps. These elements require precision and attention to detail, skills that connect students to generations of basket makers who understood that beauty and utility must work in harmony.
Each student will complete a finished pack basket ready for seasonal adventures – Annie will also cover information on how to dye or stain your completed basket at home, if desired. Take home a piece that embodies both the meditative rhythm of traditional craft and the practical needs of contemporary life.
