Known either as a decorative landscaping plant, or a fast-growing, invasive vine, English Ivy is being recast as a potentially useful weaving material for folks who are up to the challenge! Notoriously hard to bend and shape, but unusually strong, English Ivy presents both unique challenges and benefits for the adventurous weaver. Celeste will demonstrate two different weaving techniques: plaiting and twining. Plaiting is the technique of laying the plant material alongside itself, alternating strips. Twining is the technique of wrapping two vines around a “spoke,” twisting it and placing one vine in front of the spoke and the other vine in back of the spoke. These techniques are the cornerstones of weaving, applicable to many types of basketry materials. For those interested in processing the English Ivy to make more flexible weavers, students will also learn how to split the vine in half or quarters. After a day of strenuous weaving, students will go home with a fairly large basket and the skills to work with other natural weaving materials.
Students are asked to bring a small pocket knife.

No previous experience necessary. This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over who meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria for Studio Workshops.
