Have you ever noticed the huge diversity of trees planted around Portland and wondered what species they were? Portland parks are the perfect place to learn how to identify trees by their leaves, buds, and bark. From furrows to fissures and pinnate to palmate, Forest Ecologist, Lorelle Sherman will be sure you will leave this course with an expanded vocabulary for describing trees, gaining the skills to make identifying species easy and fun! This course will focus on trees native to Oregon, starting with broader family groups and working more narrowly towards species. We will cover maples, oaks, our beloved conifers, and interesting non-native planted species. We will highlight the edible properties of our urban trees as well as their role in the forest ecosystem. Did you know all parts of the bigleaf maple are edible? Or that our urban trees are interconnected with the fungal network? Speaking of mushrooms, native tree identification can be very helpful for stepping up your mushroom hunting game!

Students will leave this 3-hr off-site workshop with an expanded understanding and appreciation of the native trees, an expanded vocabulary to help in the ID process, and a Craft Book detailing terms, species and ID tips and tricks.

This workshop will be held in the Portland Metro Area.
