Urban Bird ID (9am-12pm) with Lorelle Sherman
Teacher: Lorelle Sherman
Availability: 15 open
Portland is home to an amazing variety of resident and migratory birds. On a stroll through a local park, you may find warblers singing in the tree canopy, flycatchers hunting in the meadow, quail cheeping in the forest understory, and birds of prey soaring high overhead. Many Portland parks serve as stopover sites for migrating birds you don't often see in the area, such as the Mountain Bluebird. Visiting during the spring and fall migrations increases the chances of seeing an uncommon or rare bird species. This course is scheduled during the annual fall migration along the Pacific Flyway, where the group may see turkey vultures and hawks flying southward and songbirds refueling and resting before continuing south. In this class, Forest Ecologist and self-proclaimed ‘birdnerd’, Lorelle Sherman, will offer lessons on bird identification by sight, sound, and behavior, highlighting our common species so students can practice at home. Students will leave this class with the strategies and resources necessary to become a full fledged birdnerd! Binoculars are encouraged, but not required. Students will be provided a Craft Book with species, ID tips, and other useful information! This workshop will be held in the Portland Metro Area.
