Surface & Construction: Cut-Paper Collage (Nov) with Autumn Quigley
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Autumn Quigley
Availability: SOLD OUT
“After having made the first papier collé, I felt a great shock, and it was an even greater shock for Picasso when I showed it to him.” - George Braque
While the shock of collage has faded over the past 100 years since George Braque, Pablo Picasso and other avant garde artists ushered a new way of constructing imagery into the modern art conversation, the potency and influence of collage can be felt in contemporary fine art, illustration and commercial art today.
Collage offers both beginning and experienced artists the opportunity to approach materials in an experimental, playful way to create graphic and complex works on paper. This one-day workshop will introduce students to the techniques of collage, focusing on the exploration of materials and creation of distinctly colored and textured surfaces. Artist and illustrator, Autumn Quigley brings a unique perspective to collage, utilizing a technique of layering hand-painted, printed and cut shapes to create delightful imagery full of depth and dimension. Autumn will guide students through experimentations in mark making to create texture and form, offering approaches to paper preparation, cutting-technique and development of composition. Students will create a small collage in class, and leave with painted, stained, and printed papers for future pieces.
