Slow Fashion: Plant-Dyed Garments with Janessa Bautista

Date: Saturday March 19, 2022
Time: 10am-4pm
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Janessa Bautista
Tuition: $140
Materials: $25

A veteran of the fashion world, first generation Filipina American Janessa Bautista knows a thing or two about the pressure and stress of operating within the mainstream fashion environment. For over 20 years, she’s been designing and sewing clothing, slowly shifting away from a typical wholesale model and moving toward imbuing textiles and garments with concept and meaning. An antidote to fast fashion, using plant-based fibers such as cotton and linen, and botanical color derived from flowers, foraged fungi, dye plants such as indigo, food waste and other common plants, Janessa has created a line of clothing (Milk & Honey Collection) that represents her values and ethos. This workshop focuses on natural dyes that are suitable for cotton or linen garments, and includes a step by step tutorial on how to scour and mordant a garment, as well as the steps needed to create a dye-bath to achieve peak saturation. Students are asked to bring a garment to dye, and will have the opportunity to purchase a piece from Janessa’s collection to dye,  if interested. Students will leave with color swatches from multiple dye baths, recipes & natural dye craft book, as well as at least 1 plant-dyed garment.

No previous experience necessary. Open to students 16 & up. Please bring a white or light-colored cotton or linen garment to dye.
