Columbian textile artist, Maria Lucia Londoño teaches an exploration of surface design, using felt making to create volume, dimension and texture. More info...
“Creating felt helps us recall our ancestors. It takes us back to the origin of human creation. Before learning how to knit or weave, we collected the wool from our sheep to warm our bodies and houses. Wool, heat, humidity and friction; a casual cohesion that gave birth to the first textile creation.” -Maria Lucia Londoño
We’re honored to host Columbian textile artist, Maria Lucia Londoño for this 2-day exploration of surface design, using the ancient technique of felt making to create volume, dimension and texture. This class will focus on modern approaches to felting to transform a dense and durable fiber into a variety of textural patterns, 3-D shapes and structures. Students may consider designing their felted fabrics for end use as pillows, rugs, tapestries or fashion accessories. Students can expect a complete immersion in the design process as well as the physical experience of hands-on felting. Undyed and naturally-dyed Colombian wool will be provided and students will go home with numerous textile samples demonstrating specific techniques and recording experiments in shape, pattern and volume.
This is an ideal workshop for those with basic felting skills who are interested in a design-focused approach to this age-old technique. Spanish speakers welcome!
No previous experience necessary, though ideal for those with some felting experience. This workshop is open to anyone 18 years old & over who meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria for Studio Workshops.
