Sculptural Baskets & Vessels

Teacher: Rose Covert | Date: Sat, 03.01 , 10am-4pm | Location: SE Division Studio
Tuition: $165 | Materials: $25

Say the word basket, and images of utilitarian forms made with willow, rattan or other natural materials might come to mind. If you want a basket to take to the farmer’s market- keep scrolling our offerings- we’ve got lots of workshops that teach traditional basketry. However, if you’re curious about creating sculptural vessels and working with unusual materials, this is definitely the class for you! More info...

We’re excited to collaborate with artist and weaver, Rose Covert to offer a workshop that defies the expectations of what a basket can be! Starting with traditional construction techniques such as coiling, twining, plaiting and cordage-making, students will gain a strong understanding of how to build structure and form. Now here’s where tradition stops and exploration begins!

Students will have access to a wide range of upcycled materials such as plastic netting, grocery bags, woven feed bags, fabric waste, cording, laces, rope, foraged ocean waste, metal and coated wire. Using these waste materials, students will be encouraged to create vessels that defy the constraints of utilitarian basketry. Have some weird materials laying around? Bring them and see how traditional techniques can transform contemporary materials with a little skill and a lot of imagination.
