Screen Printing with Mordants & Natural Dyes with Madeleine McGarrity
Time: 6:30-9:30pm Friday and 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Madeleine McGarrity
Printing with mordants is one of several methods used to print on textiles with natural dyes. Not only does this technique offer superior color saturation and permanence, but it also allows the maker to produce a multicolor print from a single dyebath. Printing with mordants is an ancient practice, historically used in both artisanal workshops and industrial production settings. This class is a hands-on, detailed introduction to the techniques and processes needed to fully complete mordant-printed projects. Students will screen print, fix and dye printed samples to take home, as well as learn the chemistry behind these processes, coupled with the historical context of both the dyes used in class and the practice of printing with natural dyes in general.
Open to those with basic knowledge of natural dyes or screen printing, 16 yrs & up.
