Sashiko Japanese Mending

This everyday practice was deeply tied to the values of Mottainai — translated simply to ‘don’t waste.’ In this 3 hr workshop, Tyler Peterson will share the basic stitches of sashiko mending. Tools, patterning techniques, historical context, and basic construction processes will be discussed. Students will leave with their own sampler of basic stitches, a partially mended garment and needles and thread to continue their new sewing skills at home. Students are asked to bring their own garment or textile to mend using the sashiko techniques covered in class.
