Sunstones & Hot Springs: CO-ED Rockhounding Road Trip! with Alison Jean Cole

Date: Saturday June 20, 2020 - Monday June 22, 2020
Time: 11am meeting time
Location: Offsite
Teacher: Alison Jean Cole
Tuition: $300
Materials: $100

Join us for a weekend expedition to the Oregon/Nevada borderlands during the summer solstice, where we'll dive into the geology of the Great Basin desert, the largest continental rifting zone on the planet. We'll hunt for sunstones in Oregon's Warner Valley, visit petroglyphs and hot springs, and collect opalite and petrified wood in Nevada's Virgin Valley. We'll plan to camp at hot springs both nights, with a healthy and delicious dinner served tent-side by our camp chef. Trip leader Alison Jean Cole considers this region to be one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

We'll be meeting at 11am in Plush, Oregon on June 20th. Participants coming from far away should plan to be in the area the night before. Alison recommends staying at the Summer Lake Hot Springs in Paisley or Hunter's Hot Springs in Lakeview. The trip will end near Denio Junction, NV on Monday June 22nd. Participants may want to consider visiting the Virgin Valley Opal Mines on Monday before departing the region. Opal digging is expensive-but worth it for all the jewelers and precious-stone collectors in the group!

Directions, packing lists and lots more information provided upon reservation. This is a car-camping trip, and open to all healthy adults over the age of 16. Students are responsible for bringing tents and camping gear. Dinner is provided on Saturday & Sunday. All other meals are the responsibility of each student. This workshop is ideal for those who are comfortable being outside in all weather, including extreme heat, and are active, healthy and able-bodied. We will be hiking in desert conditions, and camping in unimproved wilderness areas. There will be no bathrooms or showers on this trip. A detailed itineray and packing list will be provided prior to the trip. Carpooling is highly recommended - WildCraft will connect all participants and help arrange carpools. Please reach out with any questions about this trip.
