Resist Stitch Indigo Patterning
Tuition: $170 | Materials: $30
Discover the mesmerizing intersection of stitch and dye in this hands-on workshop led by textile artist, Allison Alford. More info...

Students will learn how simple running stitches can create complex patterns when combined with the magic of indigo dyeing. Students will practice creating precise stitches, even gathering, and secure knotting methods while developing an understanding of how stitch placement affects the final pattern. Allison will share samples of traditional pattern variations and discuss how students can develop their own designs.
After preparing stitched pieces, students will move to the dye studio to work with natural indigo vats. Allison will introduce students to using a natural indigo vat. If you’re interested in learning how to create your own natural vat, check out her full-day workshop on creating a natural indigo vat! Students will learn proper dipping techniques, oxidation processes, and how to achieve different shades of blue through multiple dips. The magic comes to life in the final steps, when students remove their stitches to reveal detailed, organic patterns! Allison will end class with a discussion of proper washing and finishing techniques. Students will leave with various cotton samples, and a patterned cotton tea towel.
