Woven Rag Rugs with Kayla Mattes
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Kayla Mattes
Across cultures, rag rugs have been woven from worn-out garments and textiles; a thrifty and utilitarian gesture in times when nothing went to waste. We’re excited to bring that no-waste spirit to this weekend intensive where students will create a rag rug using salvaged materials and learn to weave on a large-format frame loom. Repurposed materials from sheets and clothing will be the basis of students’ exploration in texture, color, and shape-making through basic tapestry techniques. Weaving materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own salvaged materials as well.
No previous experience necessary. Open to students 16 & up.
