Rag Rug Weaving (May) with Kate Heywood
Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm Friday, 10am-4pm Saturday & Sunday
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Kate Heywood
Across cultures, rag rugs have been woven from worn-out garments and textiles; a thrifty and utilitarian gesture in times when nothing went to waste. We’re excited to bring that no-waste spirit to this weekend intensive where students will create a rag rug using salvaged materials and learn to weave on a large-format frame loom. From sheets to clothing, repurposed materials will be the basis of students’ woven explorations of texture, color, and pattern. Loom and weaving materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own salvaged textile materials as well.
No previous experience necessary. Open to students 16 & up.
