Teacher: Mary Opalenik | Date: Sat, 04.19 , 10am-1pm | Location: SE Division Studio
Tuition: $125 | Materials: $20

Celebrate the arrival of spring by learning the traditional Ukrainian art of wax-resist egg dyeing, known as Pysanky. More info...

Join dyer and weaver Mary Opalenik as she shares the rich cultural tradition of Pysanky, passed down to her by her Ukrainian grandmother. In this workshop, students will learn the ancient wax-resist (batik) method of egg dyeing, using a kistka hand tool and hot beeswax to create intricate designs. Eggs will be dyed in a range of colors, using both Ukrainian powdered dyes and natural dyes, including amaranth and berries from Mary’s own garden.

Mary will discuss the history of this folk craft and the meanings of its symbolic motifs, rooted in both Eastern Orthodox and pagan traditions. While intricate motifs require skill and focus, students will also be encouraged to interpret their own designs.

Participants will leave with at least one finished egg, a kistka, Pysanky dyes and beeswax to continue creating at home.
