Pattern Play & Natural Color
Tuition: $300 | Materials: $35
This class is sold out.
This two-day workshop led by textile artists (and sisters) Emily & Sarah Parkinson, will introduce students to the joys and possibilities of using thickened mordants, and natural dyes to create graphic patterns! More info...
Students will start with a few fast and loose exercises on paper to get their ideas flowing before moving toward exploring patterns on fabric. Using a range of thickened mordants, including various concentrations of alum, iron, and titanium, Emily & Sarah will demonstrate how to paint, stamp, and stencil on cotton fabric. After drying overnight, students will bring their patterned fabrics to life using a range of natural dyes, such as pomegranate, cutch, madder, lac, and weld. By the end of this 2-day workshop, students will leave with new ideas, inspiration, a small library of mordant/dye samples, and a handful of patterned and dyed pieces that can be worn as bandanas, framed as wall pieces, or incorporated into sewing projects. Most importantly, students will leave with the knowledge to continue natural dye patterning experiments at home. This workshop is open to students (18 & up) of all levels, including beginners and those who are new to working with natural dyes.
