Papier-Mâché Sculpture
Tuition: $250 | Materials: $25
Paper Mache boasts a surprisingly long history, with its roots reaching back to 2nd century BC China. The literal translation from French, "papier-mâché," meaning "chewed paper," hints at its humble beginnings. More info...
Early artisans used Paper Mache to craft everything from practical items like helmets to decorative objects like masks. This versatile and accessible art form spread throughout Asia and eventually found its way to Europe, flourishing in the 17th and 18th centuries. Here, it was used to create a surprising range of objects, from delicate dolls and furniture to even architectural elements!
In this workshop, artist and designer, Zena Kanes will demonstrate different sculptural techniques, using 2-dimensional materials to create 3-dimensional forms. Paper Mache lends itself well to collage, mixed media, and using found items in creative ways.
Day-one will include an introduction to the materials, techniques on how to make a 3-D armature out of cardboard and wire, and how to mix two distinct recipes. Students will cover their armatures with Paper Mache. Zena will instruct on different techniques to speed up drying times, and prepare the sculptures for finishes such as paint, varnish, or other decorative embellishments.
On day-two, students will focus on further drying their sculptures, smoothing out any surface imperfections, and exploring different techniques of painting. To make sure these works of art last, Zena will discuss how to seal the sculptures and display strategies.
