Overshot Knitting: Sweater Construction (4-Week Series) with Elspeth Vance

Date: Wednesday March 02, 2022 - Wednesday March 23, 2022
Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm Wednesdays
Location: Portland Studio
Teacher: Elspeth Vance
Tuition: $340
Materials: $15

Overshot is an optical weaving technique, found in early 19th century American cotton and wool coverlets. This sophisticated patterning took root in handweaving communities in rural southern Appalachia, flourishing as a form of expression and mastery in the region until the early 20th century. Traditionally made on a four harness loom, textile artist, Elspeth Vance has adapted these visually complex overshot designs into approachable patterns for handknitting. Elspeth will share a custom-designed pattern with students, and together the group will cover Fair Isle (knitting with two strands of color at once) how to knit a garment from the top down, raglan style and knitting in the round. Raglan sweaters can be made to accomodate any size or shape of body and have a classic silhouette. Students will learn the anatomy of this sweater and will also learn to integrate the Overshot draft within the contours of this timeless garment. Materials fee covers the cost of the pattern and printed materials, while yarn, needles and other basic tools will be supplied by students according to a materials list provided upon registration. Students will work on their sweaters during class and in-between sessions, culminating in the creation of an overshot patterned sweater.

Ideal for those with intermediate/advanced knitting experience, 16 yrs & up. Rather than including the cost of yarn in the materials fee, students are welcomed to bring their own yarn, needles and other knitting tools. A complete materials list will be provided upon registration. This workshop provides 12 hrs of knitting time. Students should expect to knit outside of class to complete this project within the 4-week session.
