Overdye Rainbow: Madder, Weld & Indigo

Teacher: Hannah Watson | Date: Sun, 03.23 , 10am-4pm | Location: SE Division Studio
Tuition: $160 | Materials: $30

Madder, weld and indigo yield some of the most vibrant textile colors, and have been used as natural dyes for thousands of years! More info...

This one-day intensive led by fiber artist Hannah Watson, will take students on a tour of nature’s primary colors and the secondary and tertiary colors made possible through overdying.

Starting with red (madder), yellow (weld) and blue (indigo) students will dip and combine shades to access a full rainbow of colors! Hannah will instruct the group in how to prepare cotton and silk fabrics to accept dyes using non-toxic mordants, and how these mordants have the power to shift colors warm to cool, and light to dark. Once students understand the relationships between fabrics, mordants and dyes, Hannah will introduce resist techniques to add layers of pattern and create visual interest! Students will take home sample swatches in addition to a cotton bandana, silk scarf and yardage in colors and designs of their own making.
