Oil Painting: Portraiture
Tuition: $375 | Materials: $25
The history of portraiture goes back thousands of years, and yet still manages to captivate us today, and to offer something fresh and new. More info...

Faces contain a wealth of information, emotion, and history, and the first step to a compelling portrait is sifting through all of that information and making intentional choices about what to use and what to leave out. In this 4-week course students will learn to tease out general shapes and planes, and to "curate" what you see into the essential elements of your subject. Students will also learn about the underlying anatomy of the face and head and how to block in a subject, as well as the color temperatures of light and shadows on different skin tones. Each student will finish this course with a deeper understanding of color mixing for skin tones, a developed critical eye, a series of self portrait paint sketches, and a finished painting on panel.
Recommended experience: Some oil painting experience would be best but is not required. Intro to Oil Painting and Figure Drawing would both be great places to start!
Students will be sent a materials list for oil paints and paint brushes upon registering. All other materials will be supplied.
