Narrative Painting: Visual Storytelling (4-week)

Teacher: Rachel Warkentin | Date: Tuesday November 7 - Tuesday November 28, 6:30pm-9:30pm | Location: Offsite
Tuition: $360 | Materials: $15

How do you tell a story through your artwork? Whether you’re expressing your own personal experience, a reimagined history, or something entirely from your imagination, narrative painting can be a meaningful way to connect with yourself and your audience. More info...

Join artist Rachel Warkentin at her studio and learn how to discover and engage with the stories that are most relevant to you through creative and collaborative brainstorming activities, to break out of your areas of comfort and familiarity, and to develop authentic content in your art practice.

Students will learn how to use reference photos effectively, methods of incorporating mixed media, and how to think beyond the standard rectangular painting on canvas. Students will leave class with a more developed artistic intention, concrete strategies for working through creative blocks, and at least one finished painting.

Students should bring paints and brushes in the medium of their choice, as well as prepared canvas, panel, or other painting surfaces. Students who have taken Intro to Oil Painting can bring the set from that class. Mixing and cleaning oils (for oil paint users), palettes, paper, and brush cleaning supplies will be provided.

This class is ideal for those with some painting experience. Intro to Oil Painting or Beginning Watercolor would be great places to start.

This workshop is held at Rachel's NE Portland studio. The studio is located on the 2nd floor and is, unfortunately, not ADA accessible.
