Patterns with Natural Dyes: Mordant Printing
Tuition: $275 | Materials: $35
Before the advent of roller printing and screen printing, using painted or printed mordants to create patterned textiles was widely practiced. More info...

This method of surface design produces beautiful, multi-layered prints on fabric using only plants, minerals and other natural materials.
In this 2-day workshop, textile artist and educator Hannah Watson will guide students through the process of making various thickened mordant pastes to paint, stencil or stamp onto cotton and linen fabrics. Using a combination of traditional dyes (such as madder, weld and cutch) and locally foraged dyes (seasonally dependent), students will create dye baths and watch their mordanted patterns appear in dazzling color as fabric emerges from the dye pot!
Students will leave class with color samples from each dye pot, as well as three dyed pieces of bandana-sized cloth. Open to all levels.
