Moku-hanga, the traditional Japanese method of woodblock printing, is an elegant, green and low-tech process that works easily in a home studio and combines well with other printmaking methods. More info...

This two day workshop will introduce students to the centuries old art form of Japanese moku-hanga woodblock printmaking. This woodblock printing technique originated in China and then moved to Japan as a way to spread printed texts and create Japan’s traditional color-washed prints such as The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai.

With its transparent water-based pigments, which are applied with special brushes and printed by hand, moku-hanga allows for soft and painterly relief prints. This workshop will introduce all aspects of the process: transferring images to wooden blocks, carving with Japanese tools, using the Kento registration system and printing with brushes and a baren.

This class is open to beginners who are interested in printmaking as well as experienced printmakers who are interested in expanding their techniques.
