Moku-hanga: Traditional Japanese Woodblock Printing with Kanani Miyamoto

This class will introduce the basics of Japanese moku-hanga woodblock printmaking. This woodblock printing technique originated in China and then moved to Japan as a way to spread printed texts and create Japan’s traditional color washed prints such as The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai. 

In this weekend intensive, students will learn the proper use of traditional tools and materials, carving, basic registration, and vocabulary associated with this timeless printmaking technique. Students will take home their carved blocks and a small edition of two colored prints. This class is open to beginners who are interested in printmaking as well as experienced printmakers who are interested in expanding their techniques.

No previous experience necessary. Open to students 16 & up.
