Make Your Own Materials: Oregon Mineral Watercolors
Tuition: $170 | Materials: $35
Curious about regional color? Interested in exploring the concept of place-based making? Or maybe just looking to learn how to make your own mineral paint? More info...
This one-day intensive offers students the opportunity to understand color and paint from the ground up. Carolyn Sweeney of Strata Ink will provide locally foraged minerals, discussing elements of safe and ethical gathering, then demonstrate the step by step process of transforming these humble materials into beautiful watercolor paints.
Students will be immersed in the ancient craft of grinding minerals into pigments using a mortar and pestle, learning the technique of levigation. To complete the process, students will work together to mull the mineral pigments into a finished state, and using a natural binder, will learn the final steps of creating paint. Students will leave with a set of hand-mulled, mineral pigment watercolors.
