Make Your Own Materials: Artist Charcoal
Tuition: $160 | Materials: $35
Charcoal is one of the oldest artist materials, and a classic for a reason! More info...
Ideal for quick sketches and developing texture through mark-making, charcoal is a versatile material beloved by artists young and old. Have you ever wondered how to make your own drawing charcoal? In this class students will learn how to make a simple charcoal kiln that can be used in any fire. The group will test a variety of different materials for charcoal making, including bones for ‘bone black’, corks for ‘cork black’, and small peeled sticks for traditional drawing charcoal.
Carolyn will teach students how to make a black ink by combining the dust from powdered charcoal and homemade watercolor binder. Participants will leave with charcoal sticks, a bottle of handmade charcoal ink and confidence to experiment with a wide variety of natural materials to continue the charcoal-making process.
