Lake Pigments: Watercolor Paint from Natural Dyes

Teacher: Carolyn Sweeney | Date: Saturday June 10 - Sunday June 11, 10am-4pm | Location: SE Division Studio
Tuition: $265 | Materials: $35

Wait, you can make watercolor paints from plants?! That's right, and Carolyn Sweeney of Strata Ink is here to show you how! More info...

Day one of this workshop will be dedicated to the first step in the process: extracting natural dyes from traditional dye plants like madder and locally foraged plants such as goldenrod. Students will learn how to process each plant and create a dye bath. With some simple chemistry, Carolyn will demonstrate how to strain these dye baths, to create insoluble pigments with the help of non-toxic, readily available ingredients. On the second day of this workshop, students will have powdered lake pigments ready for paint making. Students will learn how to mull their own watercolor paints on a glass slab using these plant pigments. Carolyn will cover ethical foraging, tool hacks, watercolor binder recipes, and how to store these precious lake pigments. Students will go home with a set of handmade watercolor paints including genuine rose madder.
