Overshot is an optical weaving technique, found in early 19th century American cotton and wool coverlets. This sophisticated patterning took root in handweaving communities in rural southern Appalachia, flourishing as a form of expression and mastery in the region until the early 20th century. Traditionally made on a four harness loom, textile artist, Elspeth Vance has adapted these visually complex overshot designs into approachable patterns for handknitting. Elspeth will share a custom-designed pattern with students, and together the group will cover Fair Isle (knitting with two strands of color at once) and knitting in the round. In between sessions, students will work on their projects, with the goal of completing a unique overshot pillow sham in this 4-week class! Materials fee covers the cost of the pattern and printed materials, while yarn, needles and other basic tools will be supplied by students according to a materials list provided upon registration.

Students must know how to knit and purl prior to registering for this class. This is an ideal workshop for intermediate knitters. All materials provided. Open to all adults 16 & up.
