My journey with kites began during a time of deep reflection, prompted by the many humanitarian crises unfolding in the world. Two questions guided me: How can I set good intentions into the air? and How can I connect with my humanity? These questions sparked my passion for kite making. I immersed myself in the art by exploring books, materials, and techniques, transforming my curiosity into a meaningful creative practice. For the kites that didn’t fly, I embraced them as “wind sculptures,” viewing them as a conversation with the wind, even in stillness. - Lucas Cantoni Jose
This workshop invites you to discover the joy of traditional kite making, where simple materials like paper, bamboo, and thread transform into soaring works of art! Guided by self-tuaght Brazilian artist Lucas Cantoni Jose, students will learn to craft delicate yet resilient kites using time-honored techniques passed down through generations and cultures.
Together, the class will explore step-by-step construction methods for creating diamond kites and more experimental wind sculptures. Lucas will then guide students in a variety of surface design techniques to add unique patterns, marks, and colors to each kite – allowing everyone to make a truly unique wind sculpture! Finally, students will learn how to make and attache a kite bridle and tail. Class will conclude with a walk to the local park to let our art take flight!
