“I have created Kaleidoscope from the Sea as an all-inclusive platform for intergenerational friendships to emerge. Knowledge shared across generations further allows us to tap into our knowledge as a collective, and grow stronger and more capable of sustainable lasting change, together, as a diversified community.” - Shelby Silver. Multidisciplinary ecological artist, educator and cold water diver.
Kaleidoscope from the Sea was inspired by the many pieces of plastic floating in the ocean, and that when collected and observed appear as if we were looking through a kaleidoscope, vibrant, textured, and unique, just like each of us. While the concept of ocean plastic is frightening, we will learn about the importance of shifting the narrative of plastic marine debris in order to become positively, solution-based through creative conservation.
In this class, Shelby will guide students through the process of creating mosaics and mandalas with reclaimed plastic marine debris that the group will collect from one of the local Oregon beaches in the Cannon Beach area. As students create with their found items, they experience how debris and refuse can be transformed into beautiful artwork. With mindful stewardship at the center, Kaleidoscope from the Sea is nothing short of empowering, and inspiring!
